Flying could soon become much easier for pet parents travelling from Italy, following new guidance from the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, ENAC.
Until recently, dogs travelling inside an aircraft cabin were generally required to be small enough to fit inside a carrier placed underneath the passenger’s seat. Larger dogs usually had to travel in the aircraft hold.
The updated approach gives airlines greater flexibility to welcome bigger dogs into the cabin, provided that strict safety requirements are followed.
What Do the New Rules Mean for Dog Owners?
Under the new framework, airlines may allow larger dogs to travel beside their owners in approved carriers or specially secured spaces.
However, this does not mean that every dog will automatically be accepted on every flight. Airlines must decide whether to introduce the service, which aircraft and routes are suitable, and what weight or size limits will apply.
Some Italian airlines have already started introducing options for medium-sized dogs, including services that allow dogs weighing up to approximately 30 kg to travel in the cabin when an additional seat is purchased.
Important Requirements for Travelling
Pet parents will still need to follow several important safety and health requirements.
Dogs must travel in an airline-approved carrier or another secure arrangement accepted by the airline. Owners may also need to present the animal’s health booklet, EU pet passport, vaccination records or additional veterinary certificates required by the destination country.
The number of pets permitted inside the cabin is normally limited, meaning passengers should contact the airline and reserve their dog’s place as early as possible.
Requirements may also differ depending on the airline, aircraft, route and destination.
A Less Stressful Journey for Pets
For many dogs, travelling in the aircraft hold can be an unfamiliar and stressful experience. Allowing more pets to remain close to their owners could help them feel calmer and safer throughout the journey.
It can also give pet parents greater peace of mind, knowing that their furry companion is nearby rather than travelling separately.
Italy’s updated approach represents an encouraging step towards more pet-friendly air travel. However, travellers should always check directly with their airline before booking, as cabin access, prices, carrier requirements and weight limits may vary.
